About Dines Carlsen (1901 - 1966)

The son of Emil Carlsen (1853-1932), Dines Carlsen was born in New York City on 28 March 1901. Naturally, he studied painting under his father, who had taught at the National Academy of Design since 1891. When Dines was only seven, his father took the family to Europe. Meanwhile, Emil was being represented by Macbeth Galleries and his works sold easily. At the age of eleven, Dines journeyed again with his father back to Europe, to England and the Virgin Islands. William Merritt Chase purchased a painting from the precocious Dines, some time between 1910 and 1915.

Already in 1915, teen-age Dines began exhibiting at the National Academy, where he would show fifty-nine works through 1949. Dines won the Third Hallgarten Prize at the NAD in 1919 and the Second Hallgarten Prize four years later. Young Carlsen exhibited four times at the Art Institute of Chicago, at the Corcoran Gallery (1916-26) and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1916-33). The Corcoran has his still-life called The Brass Kettle (1916), which they purchased. In 1929, Macbeth Galleries organized a two-man show for Emil and Dines Carlsen. Dines Carlsen had homes in Falls Village, Connecticut and in Summerville, South Carolina. He died in New York City in 1966.

Dines Carlsen executed still-lifes in the tradition of his father. William H. Gerdts relates how Dines continued the tradition of the 18th century French master Chardin through the mid twentieth century. His landscapes are more rare, but they also recall works by Emil. Dines Carlsen traveled through New England, as well as to Mexico and the Southwest for inspiration when painting landscapes.

Snow in the village (aka Snow man and Snow rabbit)-1950's

Born in Tokyo, Hiyoshi Mamoru studied art with Okada Saburosuke and graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. In the early 1950's, he designed brightly colored woodblock prints of Korean people and their customs. The prints were published by Kyoto Hanga-In. Many of Mamoru's prints are signed in English, M. Hiyoshi

Caspar van Huysum (b.1648) was a painter and etcher in Leeuwarden.

Caspar's younger brother Justus van Huysum I (b Amsterdam, 1659; d 1716) studied with Nicolaes Berchem and painted many different subjects, such as portraits, marine scenes, landscapes, history and battle paintings, but was best known for his flower paintings, for instance the Flower Bouquet (Antwerp, Kon. Mus. S. Kst).

This is a flamboyant composition, the flowers contrasting too strongly with their dark background, compared to the subtle and more clearly organized flower paintings of his better-known son (1) Jan van Huysum.
At his death, Justus I left a collection of 663 paintings, enough to suggest that he may also have been a dealer. Of his ten children, the better-known Jan van Huysum was a flower painter, and three others were painters.

Unlike most Dutch still life specialists, Jan van Huysum insisted on working out the details of his paintings from close study of the world around him. He once wrote a patron to explain that her painting would be delayed a year because, unable to obtain a real yellow rose, he could not finish the picture. Called by his contemporaries "the phoenix of all flower painters," Van Huysum learned his craft from his father.

It was said that Van Huysum led a secluded life and never allowed anyone into his studio for fear of plagiarism.

b.Justus van Huysum II (b 1685; d 2 Nov 1707),(died at the age of 22) who before his early death worked in his father's studio, was the only son not to specialize in flower painting but instead painted battle scenes and was also a competent draughtsman.

c.Jacobus van Huysum (b Amsterdam, 1686/9; d London, 1740) took over the management of his father's studio on the latter's death but in 1721 moved to England to work for Horace Walpole, who was also a patron of Jan. Jacobus was employed to copy paintings in Walpole's collection at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, including works by Caravaggio, Claude and Gaspard Dughet. He also copied paintings by his brother Jan, already a popular painter.

After two years, Jacobus was dismissed from Walpole's service for intemperate drinking, a problem that finally caused his death. His best-known work is a series of paintings representing the Twelve Months, symbolized by vases of flowers set against landscape backgrounds .

d.Michiel van Huysum (1704-1760)

The youngest brother, Michiel van Huysum , probably studied with Jan. He painted arcadian landscapes and watercolours of fruit and flowers. Only seven oil paintings by him are known, but a large number of watercolours survive (e.g. London, BM), mainly described as copies after his brother Jan.

* There are also drawings recorded by a Maria van Huysum, a specialist in natural history subjects, who may have been Jan's daughter.

Происходила из семьи потомственных художников: дочь академика архитектуры Л. Н. Бенуа, племянница художников А. Н. и Альб. Н. Бенуа.
В 1914–1915 училась в Новой художественной мастерской у А. Е. Яковлева и В. И. Шухаева, в 1917–1919 — у Шухаева в Петроградских свободных художественных мастерских.
В 1920 вышла замуж за английского подданного, выходца из России И. П. Устинова и уехала в Англию. Писала пейзажи Англии, Ирландии, Северного Уэльса, Франции, Италии в импрессионистической манере.
Участвовала во многих групповых выставках в Лондоне, Париже, США, Канаде, Австралии. Провела персональные выставки в галереях Адельфи (1924), Артура Туса (1929, 1932, 1936).
Помимо станковой живописи и графики занималась сценографией («Спящая красавица» П. И. Чайковского, 1939), проявила себя как превосходный книжный иллюстратор. Ее сын — Пётр (Питер) Устинов — известный актер, режиссер, драматург, романист.
Ретроспективная выставка художницы состоялась в 1975 в галерее М. Паркина.
Произведения Надежды Бенуа находятся во многих музейных и частных собраниях, в том числе в галерее Тейт в Лондоне, музее семьи Бенуа в Петербурге и других.(Источник-)
