ALEXANDER ZEMLINSKY; Moll and Nazism
Published: June 23, 2002
To the Editor:
Re ''They Called Him Ugly, and the Pain Is in His Music'' by Johanna Keller [June 9]:

Ms. Keller writes that when Alma Schindler met Gustav Mahler, her passion for the composer Alexander Zemlinsky evaporated, ''as did the family's anti-Semitic bias.''

Alma's stepfather, Carl Moll, the noted artist, leader of the Vienna Secession and art gallery director, and his wife, Anna, had cordial relations with their son-in-law, Mahler, merely putting their socially acceptable anti-Semitism on hold. It can scarcely be said that it evaporated. Moll's own daughter, and Alma's much younger half-sister, Maria Moll Eberstaller, and her Nazi husband Dr. Richard Eberstaller, the vice president of the Nazi law court in Vienna from 1938 to 1945, easily converted Carl Moll to support of Nazism after Hitler's takeover of power in Germany. In a letter to Alma, Moll praised Hitler as ''the greatest organizer.''
Moll apparently never became a party member, as did his daughter and son-in-law. Their Nazi allegiance was the motive for their suicide, or murder-suicide, as the Soviet Army entered Vienna.

Moll's behavior was unfathomable. He seemed genuinely to like and respect Mahler. With great sadness Moll kept the deathwatch over Mahler and made Mahler's death mask. Yet Moll's Nazism some 25 years later appears not to have been at all affected by his relationship with his Jewish son-in-law. As Antony Beaumont rightly points out in his biography of Zemlinsky, ''Carl Moll was a rabid anti-Semite.''

Josef Stoitzner was born in February 1884 in Vienna.
He received his first artistic training at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Kenner. From 1906 to 1908 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Rumpler. In 1905 he started to work as an art teacher and took a teaching examination in 1909 which allowed him to succeed the landscape painter Tina Blau as a teacher at the Vienna Women's Academy from 1916 to 1919. From 1922 he worked as an inspector for the drawing classes at the federal educational institutions in Vienna, Traiskirchen, Wiener Neustadt and Graz -Liebenau and from 1937 on also as an inspector for drawing and handcraft classes at the boys secondary schools in Vienna. His many years of teaching eventually led him back to the Vienna Academy, where he taught as a lecturer from 1932 to 1944 .
In the printing techniques he dealt intensively with the color woodcut and with lithography. In 1914 he was awarded the gold medal of the Exhibition of Printing Arts and Art Design in Leipzig as well as the medal of the city of Graz. Already in 1909 he joined the Vienna Secession and became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1939 .

Herbstzeiltlosen, 1921. Colour woodcut

"A graphic designer, Joseph Stoitzner preferred color woodcuts and lithography, always in the tradition of idealistic realism."(c)

The son of the landscape painter Konstantin Stoitzner, Josef studied first at the "Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule" where his teacher was Anton Ritter von Kenner. From 1906 to 1908 he was a disciple of Franz Rumpler at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. From 1905 on he taught painting himself and in 1909 he received his teaching diploma. From 1922 on he was in charge of drawing classes at Austrian educational institutions in Vienna, Traiskirchen, Wiener Neustadt, Graz-Liebenau and, from 1937 on, at secondary schools for boys in Vienna. He succeeded Tina Blau at the "Wiener Frauenakademie" where he taught form 1916 to 1919; later on, he worked at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1932 to 1934. He then moved to the Pinzgau (Salzburg).

Stoitzner was a member of numerous artists' association such as "Der Kreis", the "Wiener Secession" and the "Künstlerhaus". He received the gold medal at the Bugra in Leipzig (1914) and the medal of the city of Graz. Until World War II, he tended to paint landscapes, still lives and interiors in the tradition of atmospheric impressionism. Harmony of form and colour is a characteristic of the painter's work.
